Birds in their castles of cactus and canyons

Taken mostly in Texas along the Mexico border near Big Bend, these images of elusive desert-dwelling birds and migrants are an attempt to capture their extraordinary beauty, usually through a combination of patient stalking and hiding to get close enough for fine details.  Yet a few good captures are worth the long drives and all-day ranch excursions to make these opportunities possible.    Especially when the sun is setting or light is challenged, incredible images become nearly impossible but also that much more impactful when they occur.
